Derive > Product Description

Derive is the trusted mathematical assistant relied upon by students, educators, engineers and scientists around the world. It does for algebra, equations, trigonometry, vectors, matrices and calculus what the scientific calculator does for numbers. It eliminates the drudgery of performing long and tedious computations. You can easily solve both symbolic and numeric problems and see the results plotted as 2D graphs or 3D surfaces.

For everyday mathematical work, Derive is a tireless, powerful and knowledgeable assistant. For teaching or learning mathematics, Derive gives you the freedom to explore different mathematical approaches easier and faster than traditional methods.

Powerful Computer Algebra System (CAS) tool
Derive algebraically simplifies, expands and factors expressions. Equations and systems of non-linear polynomial equations can easily be solved, yielding their real and complex solutions. Numeric operations are performed exactly, with no round-off error, and the results can be specified to thousands of digits of precision. Derive applies the rules of trigonometry, calculus, matrix algebra and vector calculus to solve your toughest math problems.

Mathematical worksheets
Create, edit, print and save your analyses, solutions and explorations in richly formatted worksheet documents. Mathematical worksheets can include 2D and 3D plot images, text and OLE objects. Equations, matrices and other math expressions are shown in their true mathematical format. Derive makes it easy to document your complex math work and share your ideas with colleagues.

Easy to create and analyze 3D surfaces
Rotate and zoom multiple shaded 3D surfaces in real-time. 3D surfaces can be created using functions defined parametrically and as sets of data points. Surfaces can be displayed in rectangular, spherical and cylindrical coordinate systems. Determine coordinates of points on surfaces using movable highlighted cross lines. 3D surfaces can be annotated with descriptive text and exported in popular formats such as TIFF, JPEG, BMP for use in other programs.

It's easy to use!
Math symbols and Greek letters are just a click away with dockable toolbars. Toolbar buttons make it easy to create matrices, do integration and differentiation, determine limit values, and more. Mathematical expressions are displayed and printed in the standard 2D format. Derive includes an extensive library of utility files that define functions for solving first and second order ordinary differential equations (both exactly and numerically), and for computing Bessel, Fresnel, elliptic integrals and other special functions. Utility files are automatically loaded on demand, so these functions are always available for use.

2D plots
Create multiple 2D plots to analyze and explore equations in both Cartesian and polar coordinate systems. Control the aspect ratio, scale and axis definition of your plot, and optionally view the real and imaginary parts. Trace the graph and view precise coordinates of points on the curve. Derive can even plot Boolean combinations of inequalities involving two variables!
